THE STORY BEHIND THE EXISTENCE OF THE ANNUAL AWARD-GIVING CEREMONY

Dr Teffo's vision for the annual award-giving ceremony stems from her own experience as a student at the University of Limpopo (MEDUNSA campus), where she pursued her occupational therapy degree. The occupational therapy department's annual award ceremony left a lasting impression on her, and she recalls the pride and motivation she felt as one of the recipients of these awards each year.

When she noticed the absence of a similar tradition for medical students at the University of Limpopo (Turfloop campus), she knew she wanted to make a change because she wanted her mentees to have the same experience and to stay motivated, especially given the demanding nature of the MBChB degree.

Discussions with a senior colleague from the Center of Academic Excellence reinforced the idea that such an initiative required someone from the school itself. This sparked Dr Teffo's determination to establish an annual award-giving ceremony upon completion of her degree.

The inaugural annual award-giving ceremony exceeded expectations, all thanks to the University of Limpopo's tremendous support, not forgetting the support from the other sponsors and guests, turning it into a more spectacular event than Dr Teffo or anyone else had anticipated.

This event also serves to celebrate the unconditional love Dr Teffo received from her mentees, as well as all the learning experience they shared during all the 5 years as their mentor at the University, under the Centre of Academic Excellence.

FINALLY, A DREAM TURNED INTO A REALITY

60 STUDENTS, 3 CATEGORIES OF EXCELLENCE

Building on the success of last year's event, we're expanding our awards this year to include two new categories of excellence, detailed below.

DR BOLAVI'S TOP 50 AWARDS

The Top 50 category returns for another year, shining a spotlight on the top 10 students from each level (second to final year), chosen for their outstanding academic performance in the previous academic year.

The number of awardees might seem ambitious, but at Dr Bolavis Foundation, we believe excellence isn't limited to a privileged few. We've seen bright minds crushed by narrow definitions of success, where only the top 3 are recognised and are allowed to shine.

We are of the opinion that limiting recognition to just a handful of students can stifle the aspirations of many, hence our top 50 category, which reflects the diverse talents and personalities of medical students.

By expanding the scope of recognition, we bring an approach that encourages students to value their unique journey, pace, and progress, no matter how small.

Through our broadened scope of recognition, we aim to fuel a culture of perseverance and ignite the fire of determination in more students, helping them to UNLEASH THEIR HIDDEN POTENTIAL and become the best version of themselves.

DR BOLAVI'S RISING STAR AWARDS

In this category, which is one of the 2 new categories, we are going to award top 10 students who managed to pull themselves up after having to repeat some of the modules.

The Rising Star category was born from a desire to honour the unsung heroes of academic perseverance.

These are students who faced academic setbacks, picked themselves up, and refused to be defined by failure. They battled not only tough modules, but also the weight of disappointment, shame, and isolation. They persevered, fuelled by grit, determination, and an unyielding spirit.

This category however isn't just a celebration of triumph – it's a lifeline to those still in the trenches, struggling to overcome the challenge they are faced with.

It's a message that says to our mentees and all the other students out there, "You're not alone, and your struggle is valid". We're fighting to break the stigma around failure, offering a beacon of hope to medical students drowning in self-doubt and despair.

By recognizing the journey, not just the outcome, we're saying that "your worth isn't defined by a grade, but by your resilience and determination. There's a reward waiting for you at the end – keep pushing, you're not alone, and you can rise above this challenge".

DR BOLAVI'S MOST IMPROVED STUDENT AWARD

Only one student in the whole school of medicine will be awarded under this category.

The Most Improved Student award is a special shout-out to that special student who embodies the spirit of resilience and determination.

This category, which was sourced from our Top 10 Rising Stars, was actually suggested by our mentees, and we're stoked to bring it to life.

Our mentees hoped that we track progress among all the medical students to determine who has improved most in their academics, which we deemed challenging.

However, the Rising Stars pool allowed us to pinpoint the student who embodies the spirit of resilience and determination – and we're excited to honour that journey.
